Struggling to zip up that stubborn suitcase? We’ve all been there. Packing doesn’t have to feel like a battle—when you do it right, it saves you cash, space, and a whole lot of stress.
Extra baggage fees? No thanks! We all want our travels to be easy and fun. That’s why knowing how to pack is key.
This guide is packed with 8 clever tips that go way beyond the basic “roll your clothes” hack. Even if you’ve been traveling for years, you’ll find a few game-changers here!

1. Pick the Right Bag
Choosing the right bag is the first step, and a necessary one, obviously. Let’s find one that fits your travel needs! Here are some tips:
- Short trips: A small bag is enough. It’s easier to carry and fits anywhere.
- Long trips: You’ll need a bigger bag to hold everything.
Think about what type of bag to use:
- Soft bags: These are flexible. You can fit them into tight spots, like airplane bins.
- Hard cases: These are sturdy. They protect your stuff from getting squished.
Your bag should match your trip length and what you plan to do. A good bag helps you pack smarter and stress less.

Extra Tip:
Making a packing list is a wise decision. It prevents you from packing too much. You will not forget vital details either. Begin by jotting out everything you’ll need for your vacation. Consider the weather and the activities you’ve planned. This helps you select the proper items. Check off each item on your list as you add it to your luggage – immediately, don’t tell yourself you’ll do it in the end, trust us. This way, you can be sure you have everything. A solid list makes packing faster and easier. Now let’s build that list and get packing!
2. Use Packing Cubes and Compression Bags
Packing cubes and compression bags can be your best friends when you travel – so, get to know them. As your good friends, they help you fit more into your bag and keep it organized.
Compression Bags:
These bags squeeze the air out of your clothes so they take up less space. You can choose:
- Vacuum bags: You use a vacuum to pull the air out.
- Zip-up bags: You seal them and then roll to push air out. Using these, you can pack twice as much as usual. They are great for big items like jackets.
Packing Cubes:
These are small bags that sort your things into groups. They make packing and unpacking super easy. When you reach your hotel, you can move cubes right into a drawer. Everything stays neat and easy to find.
Using these tools helps you pack smarter. You can bring more and find things easier when you arrive. Now, packing can be simple and organized!
Extra Tip:
Here’s a cool tip for packing your suitcase! Wear your biggest/bulkiest jacket and largest shoes when you fly (not heels, though; we still have to prioritize comfort and practicality). Then you won’t have to stuff them in your bag. This trick makes more room! If you get hot, just take off a layer. Wear a t-shirt under a sweater or jacket. This helps you pack less but still have everything you need.
We compared what works better – rolling or packing cubes: the conclusion is that you should combine the two methods and adapt your packing to the specific trip.

3. Optimize Your Wardrobe
Choosing the right clothes for your trip is among the top things that save you space and nerves on the trip. Myself, I took clothes on a trip and never wore them more times than I can count. Therefore, I guarantee you: capsule wardrobe can change the game. This means you pick a few pieces that work well together. You can mix them to make different outfits. This way, you bring fewer clothes but have many options.
Here’s what you can do:
- Choose clothes that match and have “joker” pieces: Choose items that look good in many combinations, such as a white t-shirt, a pair of black trousers, etc. A few shirts and pants can make many outfits, just keep one palette so that it is all easy to combine.
- Select travel-friendly fabrics: Go for clothes that don’t wrinkle and dry fast. These are great for travel. They look good and are easy to care for.
This approach helps you travel light. You don’t need to pack a lot, and you will still have plenty to wear! You’re ready for any weather or event. It makes your trip easier and more fun. So think about your clothes before you pack. It helps a lot!

4. Go Digital!
Got a cool travel tip for you: Go digital! Leave those heavy books at home. Just use your smartphone or tablet. Here’s why it’s super handy:
- No heavy lifting: Your digital stuff doesn’t add any weight to your bag.
- Everything’s in one spot: All you need is right there on your device, easy to find.
You can download e-books on your phone, so that you can pack lighter and travel easier. Pick a eReader that’s perfect for you – give it a try and see how much you can save!
5. Toiletries For Your Needs
Choosing the right toiletries can save space and prevent messes. Here’s how:
- Travel-sized items: Use small bottles for your shampoos, lotions, and other liquids. They’re perfect for short trips and fit easily in any bag. However, the travel-sized products can be even more expensive than the regular sized ones. So, we recommend you pour the liquid in a reusable 100ml bottle. Also, instead of buying those reusable 100ml bottles in a cosmetics store, just order them from Temu for less than 3 EUR for 5 bottles with different caps.
- Buy one-use packages when possible: instead of carrying 100ml of conditioner, when you will use only 1/3 of it, take the single-use packages such as these.
- Pack what you need: Only take the amount you will use. This cuts down on weight and space. You can survive without some products when going on a short trip.
6. Travel Smart with Personal Safety
There are simple ways to protect yourself and your stuff:
- Use anti-theft bags that have locks and secret pockets.
- Carry safety gear like personal alarms or pepper spray (where it is allowed – see this list) can protect you. Always check if you can bring them to your travel place. Also, pepper spray is usually not allowed on a plane. So, what you can do instead is find a place to buy it when you arrive to your destination.
Keep Your Documents Safe:
It’s a good idea to use a travel wallet to keep all your important papers like your passport and tickets in one safe place. Also, make sure to have a digital copy of everything in your phone.
Packing these items means you worry less. You know your things are safe. This lets you enjoy your trip more. Always remember to check what safety items are okay to bring with you.

7. Pack for Sustainability
Traveling in a way that helps the planet is a great choice. Here’s what we suggest when it comes to easy ways to pack in a more eco-friendly way:
- Bring a reusable water bottle to save money and cuts down on plastic waste.
- Use reusable utensils, as many places give out plastic ones, but you can avoid them + it is more hygienic when you clean properly your fork, spoon, etc.
- Pack biodegradable eco-friendly toiletries that break down safely in nature.
- Bring a tote bag for shopping and carrying extra items.
- Choose refillable containers instead of buying travel-sized bottles, refill small ones with your own products: for example, what I did is that I took a couple of shampoo and shower gels from hotels where I was staying and reused those bottles many times, as I was refilling them with my products.
Small choices make a big difference!
8. The 5-4-3-2-1 Rule (For Light Packers)
The 5-4-3-2-1 rule helps you pack light while still having enough clothes. It works well for a one-week trip. Here’s how it goes:
- 5 tops – Pick shirts that match all your bottoms.
- 4 bottoms – Choose pants, shorts, or skirts that go with your tops.
- 3 pairs of shoes – Bring one pair of comfy shoes for walking and hiking, one for nicer outfits, and one pair of rubber slippers that you can use both inside the accommodation (wash them first) and outside on the beach.
- 2 jackets or dresses – These add variety and work for different weather.
- 1 swimsuit – Pack this if you plan to swim.
There you go! Now you can mix and match to create many outfits.
This makes packing easy and keeps your bag light.
Try it on your next trip!
